Entry 32: Ellis Vaughn

Casualties of war I guess, of survival.  Not right that a man should have to force someone to kill him.  This disease, it brings out the best and the worst of these youngsters and the others I've seen since it all happened.  Trying to save his sister from what he was becoming, but injuring a stranger in the process.  At least Miriam's up and moving around, and the young Brad Cooper got a proper burial.  Tessa seems to be taking it well, though its hard for the others to tell due to how reserved she's been.  I know though.  I've seen a lot of desperate men and a lot of death even before this big Z-A Day.  She'll open up eventually if they give her the time and don't pester her.  I had to take Jamie aside right away when we got back, he was so struck by seeing her.  He didn't even seem to notice how hurt she looked when we were walking up and started stammering when introducing himself.  Not the time yet for that, but who knows?  Steven and Jane seemed relieved that I took him aside.  Vergil...  He's got experience that one.  He saw Tessa and just gave her a nod, glancing at the others and waiting until after the burial to ask what happened.  The journey into town took a long while, but we had a few zombie hordes to work around slowly.  Didn't find a snowplow for the bus, but we did find some other useful things.  More winter coats since we'll be needing them.  Tip-up fishing poles for winter and others for later.  Caught a few for us to eat while we were in the city.  The fish don't seem to have noticed anything strange about the world above their waters.  Also some books, and a motorcycle with a sidecar.  Vergil started trying to hotwire it, but Jamie found the keys on the sidewalk nearby.  There were a few other bags of clothing we took, as well as some various junk foods.  Plenty of jerky.  Sunflower seeds and peanuts.  I'd like to grow them if Jane's uncle's farm is good for us.  I'd like to see a sea of sunflowers smiling at the sun, mocking the grip of fear that the zombies bring.  Sunflowers.
