Entry 39: Jane Knight
Richard is gone. He got bitten yesterday in the leg when we had to jump up to reach a fire escape that was jammed. Steven tried to pull him up like he did me, but he didn't get hold of Richard before a zombie got to him. He... He kicked it off and came up with us, but we all knew he'd start changing within a couple days. He was brave about it. Needed our help to get inside the building and up to the roof. Thankfully the building still had a backup generator that someone hadn't used up yet. Got an elevator going for all but the last three floors before it drained completely. I thought we'd be stuck there and need to climb up, but Richard pulled the doors open himself. The infection... It gives a surge of adrenaline for a while, he said something about it trying to help its carriers stay alive long enough to fight off people who might try to kill them, or to help them overpower others when they change enough to lose themselves and start spreading the infection... Steven and I helped him up the rest of the way and said our goodbyes before he jumped. Now we're eating up some rations and trying to find a way to another building, but they're all too far to just jump to. Steven's found a few ladders, but none are long enough. Might have to lash them together tightly and hope to make a bridge strong enough to support us. It's about all that we have. If... If someone finds us, or this recorder separate from us... Don't give up. Richard gave himself so that we wouldn't spend time and resources on what we all knew wouldn't help him in the end. He took his life bearing the pain so we wouldn't waste medicine we might need later. He jumped so we wouldn't waste even one bullet. I thought he was a coward when I first met him, afraid of his own shadow it seemed. I was so wrong about him and I will miss him greatly. Richard Dolan was the bravest man I ever knew.
